American History: What You Should Know this Memorial Day

Every Memorial Day, we honor and thank the brave men and women who have given their lives for our country and our freedoms. This year, we encourage you to learn more about the history behind our country, the wars we’ve fought in, and the reasons we have the advantages we do today. Through our History and Military section, you will learn all of this.

American Sniper is a bestselling memoir and was the inspiration for the blockbuster movie starring Bradley Cooper. This autobiography details Chris Kyle’s experience as the most successful sniper in American history. He writes about the hardships war creates with teammates, family, and on a personal level. This novel “ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.”

Unknown Valor: A Story of Family, Courage, and Sacrifice from Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima is a New York Times bestseller documenting the “uncommon valor” that the men who fought on Iwo Jima experienced. As one of the most pivotal and bloodiest battles of World War II, this battle ensured that the world wouldn’t fall to tyranny and that freedom could continue to reign. Martha MacCallum’s novel takes us through stories of some of the men who gave everything to protect their families, their country, and this world.

A Patriot’s Calling is an autobiography by Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot during the Iraq war. He served three tours of duty, is a man of faith and is also a professional golfer who has awarded thousands of scholarships to children whose parents were killed or disabled while at war. He is the true mark of a patriot, and he describes his experiences in this thrilling and inspirational tale.

These are just a few novels or memoirs that discuss wartime in American history and how it has helped shape our country and the world. Take a look at our entire history and military section here. We offer hundreds of titles detailing American history, the wars we’ve been part of, and the reasons we have the freedoms we do today.

This Memorial Day, take time to honor those who gave everything. Learn about our history and use that knowledge to help us create a better future. Happy Memorial Day! Thank you to all who gave us the freedoms we have today.
